On the buses!

HJCE has won a contract to support the £27 million plan to transform Huddersfield Bus Station.

“It’s great to be working with HJCE, who are providing a high-quality solution for a complex engineering problem. Their expertise will go a long way to help deliver a much-needed, first-class public transport facility for the people of Huddersfield.” – Gary Allen, construction director at Lindum Construction, who was complimenting our work to support the development of a new regional transport hub.

The contract has seen us provide engineering services and expertise to main contractor Lindum, which is pushing forward with a £27 million plan in partnership with Kirklees Council to transform Huddersfield Bus Station. Our involvement, which also covers technical and consultancy support for a development that will feature the latest in low-carbon construction methods, is part of a larger scheme of works.

The new-look bus station comes under broader plans by the council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority to create a better-connected region, which will improve access to public transport services across West Yorkshire..

Designs include an improved interior, real time information, better accessibility for all bus station users, new cycle stands, a Changing Places Toilet, and upgraded public spaces and entrances and exits. Some retail and office frontages will also receive a facelift.

Expected to be completed in Spring 2028, the facility’s main feature will be a sweeping entrance canopy that will feature a ‘living roof’ comprising of grasses and wildflowers and also 96 solar panels to generate electricity.

Our MD Andrew Fairburn said this was another prestigious project for the firm and added: “Our involvement reflects the challenges of the construction environment, providing engineering solutions that will allow the bus station to remain operational during the redevelopment phase while allowing accessibility to the bus station environment for all users.”
